Under Vialli, Chelsea achieved success in the League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup, finishing fourth in the Premier League. At 33 years and 308 days old, he became the youngest manager to win the Cup Winners’ Cup. His final competitive appearance for Chelsea occurred at the end of the 1997-1998 season, concluding an 83-appearance, 40-goal career for the club.
In the 2000–01 season, Chelsea, under Vialli, won the Charity Shield, marking his fifth official trophy with the team in less than three years. However, in 2001–2002, after accepting a managerial position at Watford, he was fired after one year due to the team’s disappointing 14th-place finish, leading to a protracted dispute with the club over contract payment responsibilities.
