Keke Palmer is one of many celebrities speaking out about the recent abortion ban in Alabama that even has some Republican lawmakers divided. The actress revealed that she was one of many women who underwent an abortion in a tweet supporting the #YouKnowMe hashtag started by Busy Philipps.

Busy took to social media to share her disdain for Alabama’s new law on Wednesday (May 15). The 39-year-old, who has been very open about her abortion experience, tweeted, “1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Many people think they don’t know someone who has, but #youknowme. So let’s do this: if you are also the 1 in 4, let’s share it and start to end the shame. Use #youknowme and share your truth.”

Philipps’ social media post prompted thousands of women to come out of hiding and share their stories about abortion online. Keke Palmer was also encouraged to share.
“I was 24, in Europe, very far away from home,” the actress tweeted. “I was worried about my career responsibilities and afraid that I could not exist as both a career woman and mother. #YouKnowMe.” Palmer later deleted her tweet about her having an abortion. The actress did not, however, back away from her feelings about Alabama’s new abortion law.

Keke Palmer is one of many celebrities and lawmakers bewildered by Alabama’s new abortion law that bans abortion without exception to rape and incest. The law also seeks to punish doctors who administer abortions with a prison sentence of up to 99 years.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) expressed opposition for Alabama’s abortion law because it fails to make an exception for victims of rape and incest. “I believe in exceptions for rape, incest, and [the] life of the mother, and that’s what I’ve voted on,” the politician said.

The governor of Alabama, however, saw things from a different scope. “Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act,” Governor Kay Ivey tweeted on Wednesday (May 15). “To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God.”
